To Leave or Stay: Working with Couples on the Brink PDF Print E-mail
Image If you work with couples, then you have been there. It is one of the most critical life decisions therapists deal with in their everyday practice. How do we deal with couples trying to decide whether to dissolve a marriage (or any long-term committed relationship) or whether they try to salvage the relationship?

Unfortunately, few of us have specific training to assist an ambivalent couple on the brink of divorce. Our values often come in to play, are we pro-marriage? Do we privilege autonomy instead? What about the impact on children or adolescents?

In this dynamic workshop, Dr. Doherty presents a practical, ethical step-by-step protocol for offering couples a "consultation for decision making." Explore issues such as:

  • Identify and avoid common mistakes therapists make in these situations.
  • Helping the partner who wants to leave to examine the decision with integrity.
  • Obtain concrete tools for assisting couples on the brink of divorce.
  • Assist the other partner to both maximize the possibility the marriage will remain intact, and, as necessary, prepare for changes if the divorce occurs.
  • Provide time for reflective decision making for the couple.
  • Effectively challenge the idea that the other "will never change."
  • Learn the danger of the "fatal flaw" view of couples on the brink of divorce.
  • Develop a clearer understanding of our own clinical values regarding divorce and how they impact our work with couples.
  • Benefit from seeing Bill apply the model in a videotaped session.
