Individual Classes

Students interested in an individual class or classes to complete licensing requirements, due to specific interests or other reasons may take individual classes at DFI.

Couples Track

We offer our three couples-therapy courses to clinicians with systems training wishing to strengthen their ability to work with the complex issues and triangulation that couples work entails.

Family Studies Foundations

Family Studies I and Family Studies II work as study aids for the MFT licensing exam. Additional coursework can be arranged to help students prepare for the exam. Courses are scheduled and timed to coincide with the February test dates for the exam.

School Personnel

DFI coursework may count towards continuing education requirements for school counselors, social workers, school psychologists and teachers.

Approved Supervisor Training

DFI provides coursework and supervision-of-supervision for the AAMFT Approved Supervisor status.

We also provide training in clinical supervision to agencies and to individuals.

Clinical Training and Workshops

Faculty members provide clinical training and workshops in the community in a variety of settings such as mental health centers, hospitals, child welfare agencies and the community. Contact DFI for details, programs and availability. Individualized programs for specific agency needs may be arranged. We offer agencies our “marketing free” guarantee: DFI pledges focus on training your attendees in the workshop and promises not to use the workshop to actively recruit students for our MFT training program. Administrators tell us they value the professional nature of this arrangement as well as the quality of the training.

Diversity Workshops

DFI Faculty also provides excellent training in areas of cultural diversity, such as minority populations, gender issues, GLBTQ community, social justice and workplace diversity. Contact us for details.

Independent Study

DFI offers independent study courses for current students and interested applicants in order to facilitate meeting licensing requirements or round out a professionals training background. We welcome ideas from students on coursework that best meets their individual needs.

DFI’s commitment to “Excellence, Integrity and Service” requires us to provide independent study courses that meet or exceed our standards for face-to-face classroom education. For this reason, we work actively with students to design courses that will meet their academic needs and our standards.

We can develop individualized coursework with students for topics such as:

  • Attachment and Human Development
  • Cultural Identity Development and Disruption
  • GLBT Identity Development: Problems and Possibilities
  • Human Sexuality Across the Lifespan
  • Play Therapy Foundations
  • Play Therapy Advanced
  • Play Therapy Special Issues
  • Family Therapy Foundations
  • Other courses available or can be developed

Independent study courses may be completed in single Standard Didactic Unit increments. The Executive Director must pre-approve all independent study work at DFI. All independent study work must be of a quality nature with visible demonstration of competencies developed. DFI does not want to provide nominal “sign-off” types of courses that do not fit our operating values and mission. We do want to work with clinicians to help them fill in the gaps or individualize their learning experience.

Distance Learning

DFI offers distance learning options based on our core curriculum. Students missing a class watch a tape of the class and complete additional coursework. When students miss more than one class, instructors will communicate with them via e-mail to answer their questions and solicit their observations regarding the videotape of the class to enhance the quality of the experience.

At DFI, we're open to considering distance learning in other ways, and we plan to improve our Internet web site capabilities to make alternative training experiences feasible.

Creativity and Flexibility

If you have a clinical training or supervision need not addressed on this webpage that relates to couples and family therapy, relational therapy, strengths-based work, cultural diversity, play therapy, professional well-being or other areas related to the mission of DFI, then please contact us. We may be in the process of developing such programming, or your request may prompt additional programming. Give us a call at (303) 756-3340.

Thank you for your interest in DFI. Please spread the word about our clinic and training program. Your support, involvement and referrals make all the difference.
